Howard County Establishes Food Council to Combat Food Insecurity
Howard County has established a new Food Council to address a critical issue: nearly one in six residents face food insecurity, while almost one in four struggle to afford basic necessities.
Funded by a $225,000 grant from CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, the Council aims to:
Enhance the local food system through policy solutions
Coordinate existing resources and providers
Improve long-term health outcomes, focusing on chronic conditions
Create sustainable solutions for food access
This collaborative effort brings together experts in nutrition, agribusiness, and environmental preservation. It marks a significant step towards addressing food insecurity in Howard County, potentially benefiting thousands of residents through improved access to nutritious food.

Ellicott City Firefighters Brave Icy Waters to Rescue Dog from Frozen Pond
On Jan 20th, Howard County firefighters executed a daring rescue in Ellicott City, saving a dog that had fallen through ice on a frozen pond.
The incident occurred in the 10800 block of Timber Lane, with the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services responding promptly.
Despite the dangerous conditions, the rescue team successfully retrieved the dog from the icy waters and reunited it with its family.
This event coincided with a period of unusually cold weather in the area. In response, the fire department issued a critical safety warning, highlighting the extreme risks associated with frozen water bodies. They urged parents to educate their children about ice safety, emphasizing that falling through ice can be life-threatening.

Did You Know: Thomas Viaduct

The Thomas Viaduct, completed in 1835, is the world's largest multiple arched stone railroad bridge with an arc, named after the first president of the B&O Railroad. Butler's presence at Relay Junction also served as a staging ground for a raid on Ellicott Mills and the occupation of Baltimore's Federal Hill, effectively securing the city for the Union cause.

That’s it for this week’s view. Please reply to this email if you’d like to share an upcoming event, highlight a local business, or share inspiring story.
