Elkridge Set to Welcome State-of-the-Art Indoor Track Facility

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball has unveiled ambitious plans for a cutting-edge indoor track facility at Troy Park in Elkridge, Maryland. This $30 million project aims to transform the local sports landscape and provide a premier venue for athletes across the region.

The facility, set to be the only indoor track in Howard County, will be capable of hosting regional and state meets. Construction is slated to begin in Fall 2025, with completion expected by 2027. The county has initially allocated $2.5 million for planning and design in the FY 2025 budget.

This addition is expected to enhance athletic opportunities for locals, attract major sporting events, and boost the local economy through increased tourism.

Howard County officials are actively seeking public input on the project. A community meeting is scheduled for August 27, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at the Elkridge Branch Library. Residents are encouraged to attend and share their ideas for both the indoor track facility and the proposed $11.5 million Elkridge Community Center.

The indoor track facility is part of the larger Elkridge Civic District Investment Plan, which also includes:

$15 million for land acquisition for High School 14
$4 million for renovations to the Elkridge Library

Historic Ellicott City St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

On Saturday, March 15th, from 12 to 3 pm, Historic Ellicott City hosts its St. Patrick's Day celebration.

Enjoy a Lucky Leprechaun handing out treats, Irish Wolfhounds at the Welcome Center, Lucky Duck Raffle, and in-store activities. Traditional Irish music adds to the festive atmosphere.

In the evening, cozy pubs and restaurants offer the perfect spot to toast the holiday with Irish stouts or craft cocktails. Join us in Historic Ellicott City this Saturday!

Did You Know? Local Irish Catholic Heritage

Our area has a rich history of Irish Catholic influence. The colony was founded by George Calvert, who sought to create a safe haven for Catholics. Many Irish immigrants arrived in the 17th century as indentured servants or prisoners-of-war.

Later, in the 19th century, Irish workers played a crucial role in building Baltimore's infrastructure, including the B&O Railroad. The Carroll family, one of the oldest Irish Catholic families in America, also had significant ties to the area. Their legacy continues to shape the region's identity and cultural heritage.

This St. Patrick's Day, we celebrate not only the festive spirit but also the enduring impact of Irish Catholics in our community.
