Where to Winter Hiking, New Fishing Hole and More

Happy Monday, Neighbors!
Have you done any winter hiking in Patapsco? Our feature article shows you exactly where to go and why (hint: visit the ice palace). Anglers, rejoice! The fishing area in the park is being extended this week. Also in today’s issue, did you know black Ellicott City students used outhouses at school well into the 20th century? And, as always, lots of things to do!
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to Laura from 21227 for her generous support in keeping our newsletter running.

Winter Wonderland: Exploring Patapsco Valley State Park’s Frosty Beauty

Patapsco Valley State Park transforms into a magical winter wonderland, offering hikers a unique experience with no bugs, more sunshine filtering through bare trees, peaceful trails, and quality time with furry companions. The park's 220 miles of trails provide diverse options for winter adventurers of all levels.
Picture-Perfect Winter Spots
Cascade Falls: This popular waterfall becomes a mesmerizing ice palace in winter, with intricate icicle formations and frozen cascades creating a surreal landscape.
Ilchester Rocks: The bare trees reveal an expansive view of the Patapsco River curving through the valley, perfect for capturing the stark beauty of winter.
Swinging Bridge: Dusted with snow, the iconic bridge offers a picturesque scene, especially when framed by frost-covered trees.
Lost Lake: When frozen, this small pond near the end of the trail provides a serene backdrop for winter photography.
River Views: The Patapsco River, partially frozen and bordered with ice, creates stunning photo opportunities along the Grist Mill Trail.
Remember to dress in layers, protect your extremities, and stay hydrated during your winter hike. Don’t forget your camera!
Warm Up After Your Adventure
After your winter hike and photo session, head to Old Mill Cafe in Historic Ellicott City. This cozy spot offers craft coffee, fresh pastries, and homemade crepes —the perfect way to warm up and reflect on your winter adventure.

Expanded fishing zone: 0.61 miles added to the existing area
Improved accessibility: Better entry points for both anglers and DNR staff

Did You Know? Black History in Ellicott City

The Ellicott City Colored School, opened in 1880, served Black children for 74 years without basic amenities like running water or electricity. Some students walked up to 2.7 miles each way from New Cut Road, showcasing their determination to receive an education.
First county-funded school for Black children
Operated until 1953, just before desegregation
Older students maintained the school
In 1950, a well was finally added after years of petitioning
Now restored as a museum, it stands as a powerful reminder of the struggles and resilience of Howard County's Black community, offering insights into the long journey towards educational equality.

That’s it for this week’s view. Please reply to this email if you’d like to share an upcoming event, highlight a local business, or share inspiring story.
